This week I don’t have a blog for you, I just have a link.
It’s Simon Cowell’s 2-hour long interview on popular podcast The Diary of a CEO, hosted by Steven Bartlett.
There are dozens of treasures to be found in this deep, emotional, and extensive interview.
But right around the 8:20 mark, Simon shares a piece of advice his father gave him when he was just 12 years old:
“It was quite an odd thing to say to a 12-year-old. He said, “Everyone in life, Simon, has a sign on their head, and it says, “Make me feel important.””
Make me feel important.
Isn’t that it?
What we are all searching for?
In my experience, there’s nothing people want more than to feel valued. In fact, we know that the No. 1 reason people leave their jobs is not due to pay or benefits – it’s that they don’t feel valued for their contributions.
I’d argue that’s why we quit pretty much all relationships, and what is a company, team, or organization if not a collection of relationships?
I love the advice from Simon’s father.
From now on when I interact with someone, no matter who they are, what their role is, or even how old they are, I will imagine a sign on their forehead that reads, “Make me feel important.”
Imagine how much less lonely and more connected we would all feel in a world like that.
