About The Book
“I felt like Keanu Reeves from the Matrix. I just closed the book and said, “I know conversational Kung Fu.””
Tim David, Author of Magic Words
As a child with social anxiety, Brian Miller used magic in order to make friends. Now, as a globetrotting professional magician turned motivational speaker, he presents his secrets for connecting with the people you meet on a daily basis.
Using engaging stories about a magician’s life paired with easy-to-follow techniques for breaking out of our normal patterns, this book shows us how to get past small talk, make others feel understood, use active listening, and learn something new about everyone we meet.
Brian’s life changed because a kind stranger said, “I like your hat.”
How will your life change today?
Three New People is a manifesto on the beauty and power of human connection in a world where loneliness has reached epidemic levels. We’re rushed, frazzled, distracted, and frankly, scared to talk to strangers.
But what if it didn’t have to be that way?
What if we could easily connect with anyone we meet – on the airplane, at the coffee shop, waiting in line, in the elevator – and take the chance of making a new connection: one that might last for seconds, or for a lifetime?
What’s inside
The book is divided into 3 sections:
The Great Big Disconnect
An exploration of how we got here, and our goals for connection in an evolving world.
A Matter of Perspective
An aspirational deep-dive into perspective-taking and active listening.
New People
Practical strategies for implementing the techniques in Section 2 into everyday work and life.
Foreword by Zoe Chance
Before Brian Miller was a thought leader, he was a nationally touring magician with a flair for comedy and mind-reading. Do you know the paradox of mind-reading? It's that even though the tricks are the result of clever illusions, in order to persuade an audience you can read minds, you have to be able to read people well enough to actually sort of be a mind reader. That's why magic, and magicians, fascinate me.
The magic doesn't come from the tricks themselves. When you're a nerdy fangirl who's watched hundreds of magic shows, you see many different magicians performing a lot of the same tricks. There are only a finite number of ways to surprise people with limited time and props. Every master will have a unique
flair, and occasionally, you see something new and surprising. The first time Brian came to my class at Yale, he performed a mind-blowing mind-reading stunt that had students forming a chain of psychic links and somehow reading each other's minds. I still have no clue how he did it, but it's not the creativity in
the trick that sparked our awe and wonder, it was something else.
What sets a master magician like Brian apart from a good magician is their keen and conversation. When you master human connection, you earn people's undivided attention, mind and heart, and this is where the real magic lies. Brian's story of perspective-taking to create magic with Ed is one of my favorite stories
ever, and the perfect example of what I'm talking about. If you haven't already heard it in his TEDx talk, "How to Magically Connect with Anyone," I won't spoil it; you'll hear about it later in this book.
