The Seltzer Solution

I walked into the grocery store with the sole intention of buying shredded cheese. As I entered the store I noticed right at the front my favorite seltzer on sale for 48 cents per bottle. I grabbed two bottles by instinct.

Then I proceeded to walk through the entire store all the way to the back left corner where they keep the dairy holding two giant heavy bottles that were originally sitting right next to the register I was about to turn around and walk back to.

Order Matters

One of the easiest mistakes to make is doing the right things but in the wrong order. Often we reach for the easy thing first, the thing that we don't need, the thing that could have waited, and it ends up weighing us down.

-Don't buy an expensive camera before you've learned to take excellent photos on your phone. The myriad of functions will frustrate and weigh you down.

-Don't answer an email that could wait three hours if you're in the middle of a project. You'll distract yourself and end up with even more work to regain focus.

-Don't pick out the heavy stuff at the beginning of your shopping trip if you're coming back that way. You'll end up cursing in the dairy aisle.

This week pay attention to your choices, particularly instinctual or reflexive ones. Does it really have to be done now, just because you thought of it, or would it be more effective to wait?
