“Show ’em Your Humanity” with Jim Spinnato
Today’s guest is a dear friend of mine, and someone I was very lucky to have as a mentor when I was a young magician, which I definitely did not appreciate at the time.
Jim Spinnato is a local legend here in Connecticut. He’s one of the most booked and highly sought after entertainers in New England, a magician by trade who now makes his living as a comedy hypnotist.
He has a residency at COMIX, the comedy club at Mohegan Sun casino, doing his R-rated hypnosis act, and a weekly showcase on Sundays called “Spinnato’s Magic Matinee” which features the region’s best magicians.
In this episode we chat about how Jim made the transition from banking to entertainment, how to connect with an audience, and of course, Jim shares his story of a chance encounter with lasting impact.
We also spent a good amount of time discussing the so-called “PC culture” for entertainers in the modern world. While I don’t agree with everything Jim has to say on this topic, I found his perspective extremely valuable and the debate worth having.
But since it’s not really within the tone of this particular podcast, I edited a large chunk out. If you’re interested, you can hear the entire unedited conversation on my YouTube channel at the link below.
Jim’s a lover of life and language, so if there are kids around, if you’re in a public place, or if you’re offended by four-letter words, you might want to skip this episode.
